"And what is a good citizen? Simply one who never says, does or thinks anything that is unusual. Schools are maintained in order to bring this uniformity up to the highest possible point. A school is a hopper into which children are heaved while they are still young and tender; therein they are pressed into certain standard shapes and covered from head to heels with official rubber-stamps."

H. L. Mencken

Wanted: Homeschool Teacher

"Thy God hath commanded thy strength: strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us."

Psalm 68:28

Have you ever thought about how an advertisement would read for a homeschool teacher? If truthfully stated, the ad would probably go something like this:

Now accepting applications

Family seeking fun-loving, godly homeschool teacher. Applicant will be responsible for providing total educational development and daily personal care for children of multiple ages. Applicant will assume the following roles: cook, housemaid, nurse, taxi driver, administrative assistant, accountant, athletic coach, social director, computer technician, household and automotive repairman, gardener, course instructor in multiple subject areas and grade levels, and various other responsibilities. This is a full-time position approximately 120 hours or more per week.

Qualified candidates must be able to work well under pressure, multi-task, and prioritize workloads while maintaining a friendly, enthusiastic attitude. Quick thinking, good memory, and a varied background in extensive subject matter are a must. Promising candidates will be resourceful, adjust easily to distractions, and display creative, hard-working leadership abilities. Organizational and problem solving skills are a plus. Previous teaching experience and/or college preferred, but not required.

If you're interested in working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, this is the position for you! For more information on this exciting opportunity to earn fulfilling, one-of-a-kind rewards, please apply in person today.

After reading the above qualifications, no wonder many parents walk away from this employment opportunity. Who can measure up to these standards? Praise God, you can! As you step out in faith and yield your weaknesses to God's strength, you'll not only get the job, you'll also successfully homeschool and discover the fantastic benefits of teaching your children at home.

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might." (Ephesians 6:10)

My goal for home education is to raise independent free-thinkers.

"Children do not need to be made to learn to be better, told what to do or shown how. If they are given access to enough of the world, they will see clearly enough what things are truly important to themselves and to others, and they will make for themselves a better path into that world then anyone else could make for them"

~John Holt (1923-1985) American Educator, How Children Fail

"All Fords are exactly alike, but no two men are just alike. Every new life is a new thing under the sun; there has never been anything just like it before, never will be again. A young man ought to get that idea about himself; he should look for the single spark of individuality that makes him different from other folks, and develop that for all he is worth. Society and schools may try to iron it out of him; their tendency is to put it all in the same mold, but I say don't let that spark be lost; it is your only real claim to importance."

Henry Ford

Pliny, Aristotole, Charles Darwin, Carolus Linnaeus, Audubon, Pasteur, Thoreau and Thomas Jefferson were all Naturalists.

"Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude."

My Math Reviews

Teaching Textbooks is AWESOME! I have read some reviews that say it doesn't cover everything, it's made for HS'ers, it's for those who hate math...blah...blah

It is a very nice program. The cdroms have each and every problem worked out and explained exactly as it should be. There is no book that shows how to work them out, which is no biggie for me, it is already on the cdroms.  The kids can watch every problem or only the ones they have trouble with. The cdroms also have the text problems worked out. The explanations are very clear in explaining the lessons and going through each example. You can either read the book for the lesson or watch the cdrom.  They are pretty much the same words.  In the book, main points are highlighted, which is nice.  I do prefer math programs that come with cdroms. Makes no difference if the child is good or not in math, the cdroms are wonderful.

The length of the math lesson depends on the child, I would guess. It goes pretty smooth here.

Watch the lesson
Work out the practice problems along with it
Do the problem set
I or they grade it (using the book just to mark it wrong)
Then they go back and redo the problem
Then watch all the missed problems and work them out while watching the cd

Right now, we will probably stick with TT all the way through. Unless something better comes along. I have no problems hearing people jump around in math programs. There is a lot to be learned in math and it's great to get a different perspective from various programs. As math can be worked out different ways coming up with the same answer.

If I had to say one negative thing about TT, it's that the spiral bound text is kind of flimsy, thin pages. We are trying to keep good care of it though it's difficult.   I guess I could say that the price is high...though so are a lot of other math programs available.

Saxon DIVE cd's are made by another company, they do not go exactly along with the Saxon books. Seems as long as Saxon has been around they should come up with cdroms of their own to match their books. We had trouble using them and will not get them again. Though I am sure others will have a great experience with those cdroms. The TT are a HUGE difference.

The math programs I have looked at that are just as expensive, if you get all the extra cd's which I do.  The fact that some are spiral and some are mastery too makes the comparisons a bit different.

Chalkdust -very expensive, mastery.

Thinkwell -

Jacobs -only has Alg1 and Geometry.

Lial -it looked very dry when I saw it.

Foerster's and Dolciani are considered more high school level.

Video Text -

Though if your child is working ahead then it's whatever level they are at.  If your not at high school level then there are so many to choose from;

Horizons -Christian, spiral, colorful workbooks

SOS -Christian, computer based

Rod & Staff -Mennonite, mastery, non-consumable, black and white, goes up to 8th grade

AO -Christian, mastery

Scott Foresman -mastery

Saxon -spiral/incremental, constant review, scripted TM, black and white

BJU -mastery, non-scripted TM, colorful workbooks

Abeka -spiral, a lot of teacher interaction, colorful

CLE -spiral
TT -mastery/spiral

MUS -mastery

My Fathers World

MCP -mastery

Rigth Start -spiral, teacher intensive

Singapore -colorful textbooks, not much review
